  • Dipped your toe into SEO waters.

  • Wrote a whole article.

  • Researched extensively into Medium tags and publications.

  • And submitted your article to a publication!

Now you may be sitting at home, twiddling your thumbs, waiting for clients to flood your inbox. Wondering what to do next?

Repeat and track your outcomes to get clients faster

This process is repeatable. Do this as often as you want and in as many niches as you’re an expert in. The more you do it, the better you’ll get and the more clients will find you. Plus, the more you’ll learn about what works and what doesn’t. 

I recommend tracking your efforts and outcomes. Note down the keyword, article title, publication, and whether someone contacted you. This helps you figure out which publications, topics, and niches are the best bet for you. 

You may find that, for example, your logo design article has a limited amount of success. But broader branding work appeals more to the Medium readers you’re reaching. 

You can keep it super simple in a tracker like this:

Repeat steps 3-9 for a second client

Once you’re ready to continue, I recommend going back to Step 3 and selecting another client to target. Try to select a new keyword, a new publication, and maybe even some different tags. Make sure to track your progress!.

  • Pick a dream target client.

  • Identify your client’s audiences’ problems.

  • Pick a keyword.

  • Write an article based on the keyword.

  • Select a new set of tags.

  • Choose a fitting publication.

  • Submit your article.


In this playbook, you created a system that’ll land you freelance clients without sending a single pitch. 

By using Medium to access clients, you don’t have to niche down, you don’t have to stress too much about SEO, and you can easily target readers interested in hiring you.

Remember, this process takes time. Medium doesn’t promote articles on day one and then never again. If you check out your home feed, you’ll see how articles are recommended from days, months, or even years ago. That means Medium will show your article to potential clients over the next few months. 

This is a process, not an overnight transformation. The more hooks you put out there, the more likely you are to catch more fish over time.
