When writing a pitch letter, it’s important to start on the right foot. The greeting is the first thing your prospect will see and sets the tone for the rest of your email.
Here are some tips on how to write an effective and appropriate greeting in a pitch letter:
Address the recipient by name, if possible. If you don’t know who will be reading your pitch, address them as “Dear editor,” “Dear marketing manager,” or “To whom it may concern.” Avoid generic greetings such as “Hi!” or "Hey there!".
Reference any prior communication if applicable. If you’ve already been in contact with this person or organization, be sure to make a reference in your pitch greeting.
Proofread and edit before sending! Even basic mistakes like a small typo in the prospect’s name can make a bad impression and lead to the rejection of your pitch. Double and triple your copy before you send it.
The title of your pitch email should be straightforward. This is how I title my pitch emails:
Subject line: Pitch: [The idea in a few words]
Example subject line: Pitch: Are Arab TikTok influencers being monetized?
Choose one of the ideas you wrote down and want to run with. Write down your greeting and email title in the designated section of the worksheet.
